"but if you want access to the agent only by a certain role, why not check for the role inside the agent?"

I think to be able to do this will require the agent to "Run as the web user"... which I don't want cause the code is accessing restricted databases. I won't be able to know which role the current user has access to in the agent code if it runs with the agent signer access rights.
